Letter to the EDITOR from the DALLAS MORNING NEWS 3/3/95 THE GOOD THAT GUNS CAN DO The article, "Mexican Zapatistas' Threat Doubted," Feb 19, was very thought provoking. It gave the Zapatistas credit for forcing the Mexican government into initiating reforms of a corrupt political system and being more sensitive to the needs of its most underprivileged citizens. It would seem that the presence of a small group of inexperienced farmers, lightly armed and led by an articulate leader, can force a government into being more accountable to its citizens. This simple concept was well known to the Founding Fathers in our country, hence the Second Amendment into our Constitution. Unfortunately, many people today refuse to acknowledge that our long history of political stability and prosperity is, in part, due to the fact that our citizens have always enjoyed the right to bear arms. These same people insist that this right only applies to the National Guard and would like to see this right taken away from the common man. I wonder if Subcommandante Marcos had been commissioned by the Mexican government in the "National Guard," would he have achieved the same "striking successes" that many analysts now credit to him?
