President Obama's first nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court evidently believes the right to keep and bear arms is not an individual right. Judge Sonia Sotomayor has a track record of failing to support your gun rights in her rulings from the bench. GrassRoots GunRights shares the concerns of Larry Pratt, Executive Director of Gun Owners of America regarding Sotomayor.
Mr. Pratt wrote "…if her nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court is confirmed, we will never be able to get rid of her. She will be sitting on that bench for the rest of her life, expressing her anti-gun views whenever she has the opportunity."
In the 2004 case
United States v. Sanchez-Villar, Judge Sotomayor stated "the right to possess a gun is clearly not a fundamental right." If Judge Sotomayor is confirmed to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court, you can be sure she will continue to vote against your firearms freedoms.
Earlier this year, Judge Sotomayor was on a three-judge panel that ruled in
Maloney v. Cuomo that the Second Amendment does not apply to the states. This decision came
after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in
DC vs Heller that the Second Amendment is an
individual right. The Supreme Court also found in
DC v Heller that the right to keep and bear arms is a
fundamental right deserving of the highest judicial scrutiny, something that Sotomayor does not believe or support.
GrassRoots GunRights asks you to contact your Senators and urge them to strongly oppose the confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court.
